Library of Things

SPL’s Library of Things is a collection of more than 75 items you’ll find useful in your everyday life. Borrow items like mobile WiFi hotspots, birdwatching kits, a GoPro camera, cultural passes, or cooking kits.

Choose from 27 cooking kits … bake muffins made from the heart-shaped pan, or make a checkerboard cake. Try the fish poaching kit, or the paella, madelines, empanadas, tapas, or crêpe kit.

For children, the SPL offers over 40 youth kits – including LEGO duplo, Vox “talking” books, puzzles, and plushies. There are also birdwatching kits for children with smaller binoculars and easy-to-read birdwatching guides.

Your SPL card gives you access to the eShelf – with eBooks, magazines, eBooks, music, databases, online tutoring, language learning, streaming movies, WSJ newspaper online, and TV shows.

Borrow a pass to Edison & Ford Winter Estates, IMAG History & Science Center, or C’MON Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples using your Sanibel Public Library card. From the catalog, search using the word “passes.”

Sanibel Public Library loans videogames like Minecraft, Forza Horizon 4, and Spider-Man for Xbox or PlayStation. Teens can also come into the Library to play on the Xbox Series S, (located in the Teen Area) during regular Library Hours.

How do I browse the collection?

Where do I get video games?
Pick them up in the Teen Area. Library card holders of all ages can borrow videogames to take home.

How many games can I check out at once?
Each library card may check out two games. Games are loaned for one week at a time, with the potential for up to two renewals, if another person does not place a hold on the game.

Can I reserve / place a hold for video games?
Yes, you may place a hold for a game online here. You will be contacted when your hold is ready for pickup, then have three business days to pick up your holds at the Library before your hold expires.

This gaming initiative adds to SPL’s “Library of Things” where patrons can borrow items like Cooking Kits, Birdwatching Kits, or mobile WiFi hotspots. Loaning videogames was a 2021 pilot project funded in part by the Sanibel Public Library Foundation. The Teen Space developed about a decade ago, with a grant from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation.
