All children, from babies-to-age 18, are invited to register for the summer reading program online starting Monday, June 1. Participants can come into the Library to receive a special gift (quantities are limited). As in years past, kids will read to earn books for their home library and for patients at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. For every two hours of reading, the Sanibel Public Library Foundation matches each book “earned” with a book for patients at the Children’s Hospital. Since its inception in 2012, participants have helped to contribute close to 10,000 books to the hospital. The Library’s Summer Reading Program is funded in part by a grant from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation’s Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund. The Children’s Fund was established in 2008 to honor longtime library volunteer and supporter Joan Hunt Cory, who was also a 20-year Sanibel resident. Numerous studies indicate that students who don’t read during their summer vacation see their reading abilities stagnate or decline. The “summer slide” becomes more pronounced as students get older and advance through the school system.

Sanibel Public Library Foundation
The Sanibel Public Library Foundation, Inc., is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization supporting the Sanibel Public Library and reading and literacy in Southwest Florida. In the past 10 years the Foundation has provided more than $1 million in grants and gifts to the Sanibel Public Library. Sponsored programs include the Youth Summer Reading Program – Reading for Others! Which helps children maintain their skills during school break and encourages a love of reading for pleasure. Staff work with children to help set summer reading goals. When a goal is reached each child earns a book to build their home library; the Foundation matches that book-for-book, so each child earns a book for the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, too.
