Purpose:
This policy outlines the appropriate use of iPads provided by the Sanibel Public Library to ensure a safe, productive, and respectful environment for all patrons. The iPads are available to support educational, informational, and recreational use in alignment with the library’s mission to provide equitable access to technology.
Eligibility for Use:
- iPads are available for use by library cardholders in good standing (no overdue fines above a specified threshold or lost items).
- Non-cardholders may access iPads on a guest basis at the discretion of library staff.
- Users under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
Permitted Uses:
- Accessing library digital resources (eBooks, audiobooks, research databases, etc.).
- Browsing the internet for educational, informational, or recreational purposes.
- Using pre-installed applications for productivity, creativity, or entertainment as provided by the library.
- Accessing personal email accounts or cloud services for research or productivity purposes.
Prohibited Uses:
- Engaging in activities which are in breach of the Sanibel Public Library Internet Use Policy.
- Engaging in illegal activities, including but not limited to accessing or distributing illegal content, hacking, or copyright infringement.
- Viewing, transmitting, or downloading obscene, pornographic, or offensive content.
- Altering the iPad’s settings or attempting to install, modify, or delete apps without authorization.
- Using the device in a manner that disrupts other library patrons or staff.
- Using the iPad for commercial purposes, including paid work or advertising.
Check-Out Procedures:
- iPads are available for in-library use only unless specified otherwise for special programs or checkout.
- Users must present a valid library card or photo ID to check out an iPad.
- A time limit may apply during peak hours to ensure equitable access to the devices.
Care and Responsibility:
- Users are responsible for the iPad and any accessories provided (case, charger, etc.) while it is checked out to them.
- Users should not leave the device unattended at any time.
- Any damage, loss, or theft must be reported immediately to library staff.
- Users may be held financially responsible for damages beyond normal wear and tear or for replacement in the event of loss or theft.
Privacy and Security:
- The library respects users’ privacy but cannot guarantee the security of data transmitted through its network.
- Users are advised to log out of personal accounts and delete any personal data before returning the iPad.
- The library is not responsible for any data loss or breach of privacy that may occur.
Policy Review and Updates:
This policy is subject to periodic review and may be updated to reflect changes in technology, library services, or legal requirements. Patrons are encouraged to review the policy regularly.
