New VOX Books for kids!

The Children’s Area at the Sanibel Public Library has something new to offer- nearly 30 VOX Books. “VOX Books are read-along books with an audio feature that reads aloud to children while they follow along,” says Deanna Evans, Youth Librarian.  “The stories are enhanced with music and sound effects.”  These books were funded with a grant from Hans and Leslie Fleischner and the Asplundh Foundation through the Sanibel Public Library Foundation.

Each VOX Book comes with an attached speaker and headphone jack to allow readers to listen to a complete narration of that title. They are very easy to use with simple Play, Stop, Rewind and Fast Forward buttons.

The reader knows when it’s time to turn the page thanks to a jingle or a sound introduced before the tale is told. One favorite, Monster Truck, revs an engine when it’s time to turn the page. The Sanibel Public Library collection of VOX Books offers fiction titles such as My Teacher is a Monster! No I Am Not by Peter Brown and nonfiction titles like Hedgehogs by Kari Schuetz.

“They are ready for listening directly from the book–no CD, no computer, no tablet needed,” Ms. Deanna adds. They are perfect for use on-the-go as the battery-powered audio box will read approximately 100 times between charges.

The VOX Books allow young readers to see and hear the words, they engage children through the page and audio, which helps increase motivation. Whether read with a parent, or alone these interactive books increase reading comprehension.

Parents can also help children develop early literacy skills by bringing them to the library to play in the Early Literacy Corner, borrow books, enjoy a story time, or spend time at the literacy workstations. The Library’s literacy stations were a pilot project supported by a grant from Sanibel-Captiva Rotary and the Joan Hunt Cory Fund of the Sanibel Public Library Foundation. The Joan Hunt Cory children’s fund was established in 2008 to honor longtime library volunteer and supporter, who was also a 20-year Sanibel resident.

Major funding for Library enhancements are provided by the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, Inc. and its generous donors. For more information about the Foundation or to make a donation, call the Library at (239) 472-2483.
